Gaming in education has come a long way indeed! Having left the antiquated practice of using early model Apple computers with floppy disks, gaming in education morphed and advanced often and in a radical manner. Today's gamification in education has advanced astronomically with the introduction and use of web 2.0 tools. What are these tools, you ask?
Web 2.0 tools are programs and applications found online that allow users to collaborate and interact with one another. Such tools are not merely used in education, but they can be found in practically every computer-influenced aspect of life the world over.
In education, Web 2.0 tools have much the same effect that they would in any other aspect of life. However, these tools, in the hands of innovative teachers and hungry-to-learn students can be earth-shatteringly effective. OEDb (2015) reports, "these 'Web 2.0 tools aren't magical, but they may seem to defy definition at times since they save time, help you to stay organized, and often take up little space on a computer. Some of these applications are Web-based, which means that they can be accessed from any computer."
One such web 2.0 tool that has made an overwhelmingly huge splash in the pool of education is Funbrain. This web 2.0 tool provides teachers access to many types of games that can be included in content areas such as Reading, Math, and Writing. This collection of fine learning tools and games can be adapted for the purpose of differentiation by allowing students to choose games that best suit their ability level.
